Why Your Family's Location Is Minutes Old, and How ORBII Fixed It
Location sharing apps show stale pins because Android pauses them when the screen is off. Here is why it happens, how ORBII's live map wakes phones in seconds, and the settings to check on Vivo, Xiaomi, Samsung, OnePlus and Realme.
You open the map to see if your roommate has left college, and the pin says 24 minutes ago. Her phone is on. Sharing is on. She gave the app every permission it asked for. So why is the location old?
It is not her, and it is usually not the app. It is the phone.
What is going on
Android saves battery by pausing apps that are not on screen. When the screen goes off, background apps get fewer and fewer chances to run, and a location app that is waiting for its next turn simply does not get one. The longer the phone sits still, the deeper it sleeps.
Phone makers add their own layer on top. Vivo, Xiaomi, Oppo, Realme and OnePlus all ship battery managers that close background apps more aggressively than stock Android does. They are great for battery life and terrible for a safety app.
The result is the same on every family tracker: the map shows where someone was the last time their phone let the app run.
What ORBII does about it
ORBII now does what the best location apps do. When you open the circle map, it asks every phone in the circle for a fresh location.
- Opening the map sends each member who has sharing on a silent, high-priority message.
- That message wakes ORBII on their phone, even if it was swiped away.
- Their phone takes one fresh location and sends it.
- Your map is already listening, so the pin moves within seconds.
While you keep the map open, it asks again once a minute. Tap a person and their phone is asked right away.
Nothing appears on their screen. They already see ORBII’s permanent “sharing your location” notification, which is how they know their circle can see them.
What it will never do
- It never wakes someone who turned sharing off. It asks for a location they already chose to share, and nothing more.
- It only works inside your circle. Nobody outside it can wake your phone.
- It cannot be spammed. A phone is woken at most once every 45 seconds, however many people are looking.
The settings that still matter
The wake-up works best when the phone is allowed to run ORBII in the background at all. ORBII asks for this once when sharing is on, but here is where to check it yourself. Menu names vary a little between versions.

Why this matters for safety
A location that is twenty minutes old is not a location, it is a guess. Most of the time that is only annoying. On the one night someone does not come home, it is the difference between knowing where to look and not knowing.
So the map should be live when you look at it, and it should be honest when it cannot be. ORBII shows how old every location is, says when a phone has gone quiet, and now asks for a fresh one whenever you open the map.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my family's location not update in real time?
Android pauses apps in the background when the screen is off, to save battery. Some phone makers, Vivo, Xiaomi, Oppo and Realme especially, do this harder than others, so a phone with location sharing on can send nothing for twenty minutes or more.
How does ORBII keep the map live?
When you open the circle map, ORBII sends each member who has sharing on a silent wake-up message. Their phone takes one fresh location and sends it, usually within a few seconds, even if ORBII was closed. It repeats once a minute while you keep the map open.
Can ORBII see my location if I turn sharing off?
No. The wake-up only asks for a location you have already chosen to share. With sharing off, nothing is sent, and the wake-up does not turn it back on.
Which setting fixes stale locations on a Vivo phone?
Allow ORBII to run in the background: Settings, Battery, Background power consumption management, ORBII, Allow. Also set Location to Allow all the time. ORBII asks for the battery exemption itself when sharing is on.
