When we started building ORBII, we made one decision before anything else: your voice would never leave your phone. Everything else followed from that.
Here is why that choice matters, and what it gives you.
The choice: on-device, not the cloud
A voice-activated app has to listen. The question is where the listening and understanding happen.
The easy way is to send your audio to a server and let a big computer figure it out. It is simpler to build. But it means your voice, in your most vulnerable moments, is travelling to someone else’s machine.
ORBII does it the harder way. The model that recognises your distress word runs on your own device. Your phone does the understanding itself. Your audio is never uploaded, never stored, never sold.
What you get from that
Privacy that is real, not promised. The safest data is the data that never leaves. Because ORBII never sends your audio anywhere, there is no server log of your voice to leak, subpoena, or sell. Your private moments stay private by design, not by policy.
Speed when seconds decide everything. There is no round trip to a server and back. Your phone hears the word and acts. In an emergency, that saved time is not a nice-to-have. It is the product.
It works offline. A basement, a highway, a patchy network, none of it stops ORBII, because the detection is already happening on your phone. Your alert is queued and sent the instant a connection returns. A safety tool that only works with strong signal is not really a safety tool.
The trade we chose to make
Building on-device is harder. It takes real engineering to make a model small and efficient enough to run on an ordinary phone without draining it. Many apps skip that work and reach for the cloud instead.
We did the work, because the alternative meant asking women to trust us with their voice, and we did not want your safety to depend on trusting us. We wanted it to depend on the fact that we simply never have your audio in the first place.
Safety and privacy are not a trade-off
The old assumption is that to be protected, you have to be watched. ORBII is proof that you do not. You can have a tool that hears your call for help and also never surveils you. On-device Voice SOS is how those two things live together.
