Building a Women's Safety App That Works Without the Internet

Most safety apps go dark the moment the network does. Here is how we are building ORBII to keep working offline, an SMS lifeline, a Bluetooth mesh relay, and sealed end-to-end encryption, layer by layer.

Most safety apps share one fatal flaw: they need the internet. The exact moment a network is jammed, cut, or simply absent is often the exact moment someone needs help most. In India that moment is common, weak rural signal, dead zones, packed events where the towers choke, floods and landslides that take infrastructure down, and among the highest rates of internet shutdowns in the world.

So we are building ORBII to keep working when the network does not. Not as a slogan, as engineering. Here is how, honestly, including what is live and what is still in development.

The honest starting point

Today, ORBII delivers an SOS over the internet: your phone alerts your circle and nearby helpers through our server and push notifications. It is fast and it works. But when your phone has no connection, that path reaches nobody in that instant, so ORBII saves your SOS and sends it the moment you are back online.

That “save and send later” is the honest fallback. Our job is to make it the rare last resort instead of the norm. We are doing that in three layers.

Layer 1: the SMS lifeline (for no data, but some signal)

Here is a truth most people miss: “no internet” usually does not mean “no signal.” It means no mobile data, while the phone still has a faint cell connection. And text messages do not ride mobile data at all. SMS travels on the cellular signaling channel, which stays alive on bare 2G, indoors, and in villages where data has long given up.

So the SMS lifeline we are building sends your SOS, with a live location link, as a plain text to your circle whenever data is gone but signal remains. For most real “offline” moments in India, this is the single most reliable way to get help out.

Layer 2: the Bluetooth mesh relay (for no signal at all)

When there is no cell signal either, ORBII turns nearby phones into a relay. Your SOS hops phone to phone over Bluetooth, and the first ORBII phone in that chain that does have signal carries it out to the internet for you. One hop to a connected phone, and your alert reaches your circle anywhere.

Two things make this safe and workable:

  • Sealed end to end. Your SOS is encrypted so that the phones relaying it are blind couriers. They pass along ciphertext and physically cannot read your location. Only the people you trust can.
  • Works on any phone. ORBII uses the strongest radio a phone has, long-range Bluetooth on capable phones, and falls back to standard Bluetooth on budget ones, so a low-cost phone and a flagship still hand help to each other.

Layer 3: disaster mode (for when everything is down)

Floods, landslides, a cut connection: in a disaster, ORBII becomes an offline lifeline. Send “I need help” or “I am safe” to the people around you and your circle, coordinate a group, share your position, all with no towers and no internet, over the same mesh.

The limits we will not hide

The mesh only works if there is at least one other ORBII phone within range. Truly alone in a dead zone, with no signal and no one nearby, no app can send an SOS in that second, only a satellite could, and we will never claim otherwise on a safety product. That is why the SMS lifeline and the save-and-send fallback matter so much: they cover the cases the mesh cannot.

Where this stands

The SMS lifeline and the Bluetooth mesh are in active development. They are not live yet, and we will say so clearly the day each one ships. What works today is hands-free Voice SOS that runs entirely on your phone, still rare in India, and an SOS that saves and sends the moment you reconnect.

We are building the rest in the open, layer by layer, because safety that only works when the internet does is not really safety. Help should arrive before panic does, signal or no signal.

Does ORBII work without internet?

That is exactly what we are building, in layers. Today ORBII delivers an SOS over the internet, and if you are offline it saves your alert and sends it the instant you reconnect. The offline layers below, an SMS lifeline and a Bluetooth mesh relay, are in active development and not live yet. We will say clearly when each ships.

Why not just say it works offline now?

Because it is a safety app. Claiming an offline SOS that has not shipped could cost someone their life if they relied on it. We would rather tell you the honest truth and build toward it than overpromise.

How can an SOS go out with no data?

SMS. Text messages ride the cellular signaling channel, not mobile data, so they work on bare 2G, deep in a village, or with data switched off. The SMS lifeline we are building sends your SOS and live location as a text to your circle when data is gone.

Is my location safe when phones relay it over Bluetooth?

Yes, by design. In the Bluetooth mesh, your SOS is sealed end to end. The phones that relay it are blind couriers that carry ciphertext and cannot read your location. Only the people you trust can open it.

What if there is no signal and nobody around?

Then no app on earth can send it in that second, and we will not pretend otherwise. The mesh needs at least one nearby phone with signal to carry your SOS out. When you are truly alone in a dead zone, your SOS is saved and sent the moment any connection returns.
