Is Life360 Safe? Privacy Concerns and Safer Alternatives

Life360 is one of the most popular family location-sharing apps in the world, and one of the most debated. If you have wondered whether it is safe to use, you are asking the right question. Here is an honest look at the privacy concerns, and what a safer approach looks like.

What Life360 does

At its core, Life360 lets family members share their live location with each other continuously, and adds features like place alerts (a notification when someone arrives at or leaves a saved place) and driving reports. For families, the appeal is obvious: everyone can see where everyone is.

The privacy concern

The continuous nature of that location data is exactly where the concern lies. Life360 faced significant public criticism after reporting revealed it had sold precise location data on its users, including data related to children, to third-party data brokers. That reporting led to lawsuits and a wave of users questioning the app. The company has since said it changed some of its data practices, but for many people the trust was already broken.

There is a second, quieter concern that has nothing to do with data sales: the feeling of being constantly watched. Continuous location sharing can shift from safety into surveillance, especially for teenagers, and that can damage the very trust it is meant to protect.

The two questions to ask any safety app

Life360’s story is a useful lesson. Before you trust any app with your location, ask:

1. Does it sell or share my data? Read the privacy policy. If a “safety” app monetises your location through brokers or advertising, your safety is not really the product.
2. Am I in control of who sees me, and when? The safest apps show you exactly who can see your location and let you change it instantly, rather than broadcasting you continuously by default.

What a safer alternative looks like

A safer family safety app should:

• Keep sensitive processing on your device where possible, so your data is not constantly leaving your phone.
• Make continuous sharing a choice, not a default, and make it visible to the person being seen, so it can never quietly become surveillance.
• Delete history quickly. Knowing where someone went today is useful. Keeping a year of it is a liability with no safety benefit.
• Make consent visible, so you always know who can see you and can turn it off in one tap.
• Never sell your data, and say so plainly.

• We do not sell location data. Not to brokers, not to advertisers, not to institutions that buy student licences.

Voice detection also runs entirely on your device, so your distress word is recognised without your audio being uploaded.

The bottom line

Life360 is not unsafe to use in the sense that it will harm you, but its history is a fair reason to be cautious, and continuous tracking is not the only way to keep a family safe. Look for an app that shares your location only when needed, keeps your data on your device, and never sells it.
